2003 NORTH/SOUTH FIGURE-8 CHALLENGE -

2003 World Figure-8 Champion Bill Tunny, Jr., proved once again that he is the man to beat on the Speedrome' s historic Figure-8 course. Tunny topped a strong field of Indy-area and Michigan drivers to win the 2003 North/South Challenge 150-Lap Figure-8 race. The special match-up featured the Speedrome Red Line Graphics Late Models battling Michigan's ARCA Figure-8 cars each on their own track tires. Tunny took control early from his son, Ben, and Carlton, Michigan's Jeremy Miller and set a blistering pace. The Speedrome's top Late Model rookie of 2003, Mark Tunny, was the only racer able to challenge. Mark chased his uncle Bill down on Lap 127, briefly took the lead on Lap 128 and then locked onto Bill's bumper to the checkers. Miller came home third followed by Dennis Whisman of Brownstown, MI and Ben Tunny. Fred Bear, Jr., was fastest in qualifying but dropped out early in the main.

LATE MODEL vs. SUPERMODIFIEDS

Doug Greig and his Speedrome Late Model held off a pack of very quick Speedrome Late Models and SuperModifieds plus some challengers from Michigan's ARCA Figure-8 series to claim $1000 with the win in the 75-Lap "Showdown on the Roundy-Round". Wayne, Michigan's Eugene Worden started from the pole and led the opening laps through a series of red flags and stalled cars. Indy's Victor Rybolt took control of the field on Lap 3 with Greig and Danny Turner freight-training underneath Worden to run a Speedrome Late Model front row party. Much of the attention through the first half of the run was on Billy George's SuperMod starting from 17th and working to fourth before Lap 20. Rybolt encountered  problems just past half-way allowing Greig to lead. George and Charlie Hargraves flirted with top spots but a late-race re-start and a solid jump from Hargraves and teen phenom Michael Hadley, Jr., secured Greig 's win. The SuperMod's of Hargraves, Hadley and George followed  with Turner rounding out the top five. Worden held on for eighth as the top-finishing Michigander. George was tops in qualifying with Bob Higgins topping the dash.
