The United Auto Workers Union filled the
stands of the Indianapolis Speedrome for a brisk night of hot racing.
The Late Models saw a hard-fought battle
on the Figure-8 as R.J. Norton, Jr. took another win over a
fast-charging Doug Greig, Curtis McMurtrey, Rodney Sizemore and early
leader Bruce Tunny. It was a tough night on the "8" for some hot dogs
early on as former champ Bobby Douthitt took an early out as well as
Bill Tunny, Jr., George Sutton and a hard-charging Danny Turner. The
25-Lap Oval portion of the program went to "The Bulldog", Bobby
Whitaker, over rookie phenom Mark Tunny, former champ Bruce Tunny,
Norton and Bill Tunny, Jr. Sizemore set fast time with Norton
capturing the Trophy Dash. Heat wins went to Bruce Tunny, Danny Turner
and a very happy Jeff Shackelford. Veteran George Sutton aced the Last
Chance Race.
The Outlaw Stocks saw former champion Jack
Smith on top of a hard-fought main event. Kerry Wright, Greg Snow and
Oza Hoosier were nose-to-tail right behind with early leader Scott
McGill rounding out the top five. Hoosier and Brian Madden snagged the
prelims and Wright was quickest in qualifying.
Roadrunner action featured a pair of
features with another rookie winning the top-dollar "A" Main. Nick
Denny soldiered home for the win over veteran Richard Martin with
newbie Mike Gulley filling up the podium. Johnny Byrd snagged the
back-up "B" feature holding off John Collins at the line. Heats went
to Jimmy Hardcastle, Dustin Sapp, Harold Workman, and David Lee Byrd.
A special appearance by the Supermodifieds
saw retired UAW/Chrysler Local 550 member Ray Evert topping Billy
George, Rob McCalister, Jr., Joe Thurman and early leader Tim George.
