"Standing Room Only" signs greeted late-comers to the Indianapolis Speedrome ticket window as America's busiest little race track hosted thousands of special guests from the United Auto Workers union locals of Indiana. The traditional match-up between the Speedrome' s Late Models and SuperModifieds had the crowd rocking with tight racing the norm in all classes.

HEAT RACE WINNERS - Billy George, Bill Tunny Jr., Danny Turner

Once a year the Speedrome matches the super-fast and super-sleek All-Phase Landscaping SuperModifieds against the wild rockets of the Red Line Graphics Late Model division. The 2003 event rolled out before the standing room only crowd with veteran Late Model racer Danny Turner quickly taking the lead from pole-sitter David Lee Byrd. The field sorted itself out quickly with three-time SuperModified champ Billy George charging from the tail to second by Lap 20. Bobby Douthitt's Late Model joined the duo at Lap 33 and  ran nose-to-tail and side-by-side to the finish with George slipping back to third after contact with Douthitt. Victor Rybolt's Late Model crossed the line fourth, hounded by teen sensation Michael Hadley Jr.'s SuperMod to round out the top five. George was the fastest qualifier for the Supers with Douthitt speediest in the Late Models. Spike Brickley's Super topped the Hutchison Signs Trophy Dash while George, Turner and Bill Tunny, Jr.'s Late Model shared the heat races

LATE MODEL FIGURE-8 FEATURE -

Charlie Reed has been busy concentrating on renewing his drag racing career but the semi-retired veteran of the dirt tracks, flat tracks, straight tracks and Figure-8's came to town to show he's still got the juice. Danny Turner tried to double-up on feature wins but was kept busy dueling with World Figure-8 champion Bill Tunny, Jr. to take second. Doug Greig and Rodney Sizemore followed for top finishes.

SUNSHINE CAFE ROADRUNNERS

HEAT RACE WINNERS - Jerry Lovell, Jeff Ciesiolka

The Speedrome race officials turned the cars around for the Sunshine Cafe Roadrunner feature and ran clockwise on the oval for 20 laps. Doug Kegerreis thought that was a dandy idea and won the race with a hefty margin over Dusty Sapp and Jerry Lovell. Kegerreis was so comfortable he spent the white flag lap waving to the crowd. D.J. Rhodes and Kevin Smith rounded out the top five with preliminaries going to Lovell and Kevin Ciesiolka.

CHUCK'S RACE CAR PARTS OUTLAW STOCKS -

FAST QUALIFIER - Greg Snow   14.367
HEAT RACE WINNERS - Don Miller, Jimmy Anderson

Greg Snow blew in to Victory Lane of the Chuck's Race Car Parts Stock feature with blizzard force. Rookies Jimmy Anderson and Jimmy Swatts started from the pole and shared the lead through some early red flags until veteran Brian Luttrell took the point on Lap 12. Luttrell, Corey Turner and Snow went nose-to-tail to the twenty-third lap when they came upon the slower car of Chris Stewart. Luttrell went high into turn three to clear Stewart with Turner low and all three making contact. Snow snuck down low, Luttrell and Stewart ate concrete and Turner spun. Bill Fortner landed second with a recovering Luttrell third. Snow was fastest in qualifying with Jimmy Anderson and Don Miller splitting the heats.

SPEEDROME HORNETS -

HEAT RACE WINNERS - Bryan Placek, Larry Patrick Jr., Mike Smith Sr., Brett Brookshire

Bryan Placek has been on a short learning curve with his second feature win after only one month of racing. Placek parlayed heads-up driving into the win after facing a unique "rail-bird" start to the 20-lap race. The green flag flew with the field nosed-up to the frontstretch wall. Robbie Carson led the first three laps with Rob Hurt getting under him on Lap 4 with Bryon Staats right behind. Hurt and Staats were joined by Placek and the trio left the field behind, swapping the lead between them. Placek took over for good on Lap 16 with Staats and Hurt fighting hard for second. Staats ate the front stretch wall under the white flag and the race finished with Placek then Hurt followed by Mike Smith Sr., Daryl Keith and Claude Hopper. Smith, Placek, Larry Patrick, Jr. and Bret Brookshire took wins in the preliminary heats.
