SPEEDROME JAKE’S 150-LAP FIGURE 8 |
Indianapolis Speedrome
Indianapolis, Indiana
June 22, 2008
“The World’s Home of the Figure 8” ® was rocked by the thunder of
the 8th Annual Jake’s 150 on Saturday night June 21, 2008. The
150-lap Figure 8 contest for the Jiffy Lube Late Models showcased
the nations best crossover talent in front of a near capacity
Speedrome crowd. The festivities, the pageantry, and all that goes
with the Jake’s 150 were joined on this program by racing for
Stocks, Roadrunners, and Hornets on the fifth-mile oval. Also
tonight was the kick-off to the annual Pepsi Bike racing series with
kids ages 5 & under piloting their Big Wheels around the track. It
was a super show at Indy’s #1 Action Attraction!
The 8th Annual Jiffy Lube Late Model Jake’s 150 saw a record-tying
group of cars take time in qualifications for the prestigious event.
Third-generation driver Ben Tunny topped the charts with a season
best Figure 8 lap of 17.178 seconds. Ben drew a five inversion
putting two-time race winner RJ Norton Jr and his brother Jesse
Tunny on the front row. Then, defending race champion Eddie VanMeter
took gold in the four-lap trophy dash. Five-time World Figure 8
Champion Kenny St John gave the command to start engines and we
headed towards a green flag.
The Fireworks lit up the Indianapolis sky as RJ Norton Jr launched
into the race lead. Jesse Tunny slotted into second with VanMeter
tight in third. Wild crossover action began nearly right away with
the big field of cars. The race went red on lap 9 (amazingly the
event’s only stoppage) when veteran Bobby Whitaker’s machine stalled
with driveline issues. The top trio returned to form as 2003
division top rookie Mark Tunny and six-time World Figure 8 Champ
Jack Dossey Jr joined the pursuit. Van Meter moved to second and
chased down Norton. He made the pass for the lead on lap 27.
The top duo began stretching out the advantage as some driver’s
encountered trouble and dropped off the primary circuit over the
next 50 laps. Mark Tunny had mechanical gremlins end his fourth
place run on the 46th orbit. Not long after, Dossey took a hard shot
in the axle tube in turn one sending him to the pits for 13 laps.
Inaugural Jake’s winner Rodney Sizemore and fast qualifier Ben Tunny
lost the lead lap around halfway. Van Meter also dropped teammate
Casey White minus one as well. And as we closed in on the two-third
mark, he put fourth place and reigning World Figure 8 champion Doug
Greig down one.
This put the focus on 2004 Jake’s winner Bruce Tunny who fought and
clawed to remain on the lead lap in third for almost fifty laps. The
fierce battle saw he and Van Meter trade paint on many occasions
giving Norton the opportunity to close his pursuit. Eddie finally
made an outside run in turn one in the late stages to put the
five-time track champion behind by one. Bruce’s luck ran south a few
rounds later when he caught a left rear flat tire. Van Meter ran
away to the finish to become the first driver to garner back-to-back
victories doing so in only two career Jake’s 150 starts. He joins
race runner-up RJ Norton Jr as the only two-time champions of the
event. Doug Greig rounded out the podium one lap behind the leaders.
White and Ben Tunny completed the top five finishers. Mark Eads Jr
won the Raceway Auto Sales award for best finishing Stocker coming
home 15th.
“The car was amazing tonight”, proclaimed the happy winner. “I want
to thank my longtime car owner Billy Skiles and my crew for all
their hard work this week. It is great to win this race in honor of
Jake Cohen. He was a very special person to us racers at the
Speedrome.” The victory for car builder Audie Moose was the sixth
time his chassis brand took Jake’s top honors. Completing the top
ten finishers were Rodney Sizemore, Jesse Tunny, 1988 World Champion
Leonard Basham, Bruce Tunny, and Donnie Garrigus III.
The Stocks had a well-represented group at the Speedrome tonight. To
start the program, 2001 champion Speedy Teepe set quick time in
qualifications at 13.895 seconds. Then 1998 champ Victor Rybolt,
two-time class king Jimmy Kirby, and veteran Kenny McDonough scored
victory in the preliminary heat races. The feature saw rookie
contender Josh Carroll grabbing the lead early. Just a few circuits
later, Rybolt busted out in front looking to snap his season victory
drought after five runner-up results. He fended off challenges from
runner-up Teepe and speedster Nick Moore in the end to accomplish
his goal. Former titlist Greg Snow came away 4th with Carroll
hanging on to fifth.
The Roadrunner Chase for the Cup is heating up as we officially
enter the summer season. The hardcore group of racers began
festivities with a pair of heats. Former Fall Festival champion
Shane Brothers and an un-retired Brad Brooks came home first in
those 8-lap contests. The feature event was a war of attrition
during its early stages. Launching out in front was Mr. Brothers
with rookie contender Justin Dibbern taking chase. But his charge
was to no avail as Shane captured his first win of 2008. Justin was
a solid runner-up at the finish with Scott McKinney taking another
podium result on his season resume. Brooks and “wild thing” David
Lee Byrd filled the five best finishers.
The Hornet drivers took to the track for their second night of the
weekend. A large four-cylinder field constituted four heat races.
Friday’s feature winner Robby Mink Jr, Chase driver Don Klein,
returning sportsman Jeff Hazelbaker, and lady speedster Melanie Coil
bested those preliminary groupings. The feature had four drivers
under a blanket at the end of the 20-lap main event distance.
Second-generation driver Charlie Watkins used the lapped traffic to
his advantage to best Klein for his career first feature win. Third
place finisher Jess Holliday nearly stole second at the line with
race winner’s brother Adam Watkins placing fourth. Mink rounded out
the top five.
